MATTRESSES

How important is it to purchase the right mattress at the right time?

EXTREMELY. Consider that each night you sleep 7 hours. In ten years, that's 25,550 hours or more than 152 weeks on the same sleeping surface. That's more time than you will spend on any other piece of furniture you own.

TEST DRIVE YOUR NEW MATTRESS. Experts recommend trying out mattresses in the store. Wear comfortable clothes, shoes that go on and off easily and if you sleep with a partner, shop with that partner. Lie down on the mattress in your normal sleeping positions, make sure you have lots of room for the forty to sixty turns experts tell the Better Sleep Council Canada the average sleeper makes every night. Be sure you don't roll towards each other or feel motion from your partner's movements.

DITCH YOUR OLD MATTRESS SET. Once you've decided on your new mattress and box spring don't be tempted to keep your old sleep set to use at the cottage, in another room at your residence, or to give to someone else. After all, if it was no longer providing the support and comfort you needed for a good night's sleep, that mattress' useful life is over!

Sealy Canada has excellent information on its website to help you make informed decisions when selecting your new mattress.

ANSWERS

How do I know if I need a new mattress?

  1. You bought your current mattress over 5 years ago.

  2. The Better Sleep Council recommends the average life span of a quality mattress is 8 to 10 years. Mattresses older than that suffer from deteriorated comfort features & diminished support capabilities .
  3. You wake up feeling more tired than when you went to sleep.

  4. Most consumers wait too long to replace their mattress. If you don't wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, or if you feel any pain or discomfort, you've definitely waited too long.

  5. The couch feels more comfortable than your bed.

  6. Concentrate on the feel of your mattress. Do you feel coils or bumps? Your body needs a smooth, comfortable sleep surface to get a regenerative night's sleep. Your mattress should enable you to sleep through the night with minimal tossing and turning.

  7. Your mattress looks worn and uneven

  8. Inspect your mattress, box spring and bed frame regularly for sags and imprints. If your mattress appears uneven or worn and frayed, maybe it's time to start shopping. The upholstery layers in all mattresses compress over time. If you "inherited" your mattress from a family member or friend, chances are you need to replace it now.

  9. It's just not that clean anymore.

  10. Mattresses are the most used yet most ignored piece of furniture in the house. Even if you think that your mattress appears and feels good, chances are that after just a few years it is not that hygenic. Consider the fact that the average person loses one-half pint of perspiration each night and that the average person sheds almost l pound of skin each year, notwithstanding the loss of body oils, fluids, hair and pet dander that are difficult, if not impossible to clean. Beyond comfort and support, hygiene is an excellent reason to replace your mattress.

How do I shop for a new mattress?

Focus on finding a sleep set that satisfies your comfort preference first, then your quality preference. To do so, always shop wearing comfortable clothes and make sure that your shoes can be easily removed for lying down. Take your time and don't be shy. This is a big investment, not just financially. Your well-being & performance is at risk.

Should I replace my box spring?

Yes! A good box spring is as important as a good mattress! It acts much like a large shock absorber, taking a lot of the nightly wear and tear, and it contributes to your comfort & support. Don't put a new mattress on an inappropriate box spring. When you select the mattress, purchase its companion box spring. The two are designed to work best together.

I have questions about mattress sizes.

Buying too small a mattress is one of the biggest mistakes new bed buyers make. Couple who've been sleeping on a double since they got married may think they have enough room, until they learn that each person has only as much sleeping space as a baby's crib.

I have questions about pricing.

Mattress prices range greatly, from about $299 to over $5,000 for a queen set. A good night's sleep is one of the best investments you can make, so buy the best mattress you can afford. Keep in mind that most of us spend as much as one-third of our time in bed. Your investment will cost just pennies per night over the next 10 years! In fact, a $1,000 Sealy Posturepedic® sleep set costs about 27 cents per night (based on a 10-year life).
